If Deism is the belief that God is so transcendent from the cosmos He created that He no longer participates directly in it, Pantheism must be the worldview at the other end of the continuum believing that a higher power exists as Pantheism holds that God is so immanent with the universe that God and the universe are one.  As a worldview, Pantheism has plagued the religious thought of both the East and West from ancient times on up through our contemporary day.

Forbes has published its world’s most powerful women list(1) and on that list, in the top slot no less, is Michelle Obama, the wife of the President of the United States of America. Along with Obama a few singers and entertainers made the list. It all goes to prove that apparently no one knows what “powerful” means anymore.

I have had occasion, in various articles and books, including a previous posting on this site, to refer with approval to the work of Pascal Bruckner, a member of the distinguished fraternity of Nouveaux Philosophes, or New Philosophers, in France and a major political essayist. He was one of the radical youth who earned his popular colors in the student uprising of May 1968, marching in the streets, holding banners aloft and adopting its revolutionary slogans.

In one of the last Babylon 5 episodes, you see a tight community of Catholic priests housed in a secluded building somewhere on earth in the year 3000. They are the keepers of all the old records. Records of the numerous wars throughout all of history, especially the Shadow War in the 2200’s, and the commander of Babylon 5 (250,000-person space station light years from earth) and his actions that led him to direct the entire galaxy’s outcome. But Catholics were the last remaining humans in 3000 AD before the Final Coming.

My Mother was a “flapper”, one of the girls during the Roaring Twenties of the last century. She didn’t need a woman’s movement to assert herself. She drove a car, held down a job, but - I was assured - did not dance on table tops, nor smoke, nor anything else that today would be taken for granted. She married a Certified Public Accountant and that tells you what a level-headed a girl she was. They stayed married for over sixty years. She would live to age 98!

Harlingen, Texas, December 13, 2008:  The Christmas season is really in the air.  Last night we joined a group of carolers who visited with children in a Christian community filled with homes that are dedicated to caring for abandoned children and children removed from abusive families.  Along with the sounds of the season they brought armloads of wrapped gifts for the youngsters who ranged in age from one year to their teens.
